In order to get the best possible scores on TCAP or any standardized tests, Document Based Questions for Reading Comprehension and Critical Thinking, a  standards and benchmarks series, is an excellent instructional tool. We will use this series as we focus on reading comprehension this week. Listed below are the standards and benchmarks that we will address:

  • Uses the general skills and strategies of the reading process
  • Uses prior knowledge and ideas presented in text, illustrations, titles, topic sentences, key words, and foreshadowing clues
  • Understands level-appropriate reading vocabulary (synonyms, antonyms, homophones, multi-meaning words)
  • Understands the author’s purpose
  • Uses strategies to write for a variety of purposes
  • Uses prior knowledge and experiences to respond to new information

Students will work independently and cooperatively in groups for comprehension and critical thinking. Parents, please look for graded work on Friday. There will be examples of the stories we are working on throughout this week.
